The prevalence of peptic ulcer disease is increasing in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the clinical symptoms of common gastritis and gastric cancer are difficult to distinguish. Cancer is usually detected when the disease is at an advanced stage.
The vast majority of gastric cancer patients are detected when the pain is too unbearable, rapidly losing weight and already in a dangerous stage, so the prognosis is very bad, only 15% of patients survive for 5 years. The scary thing is that stomach cancer can spread to other parts of the body and cause a very high mortality rate. The average survival time is less than 1 year, regardless of the location of the original tumor. Currently, there is no method to extend this period. Therefore, the best way is to control the causes of the disease to limit the progression to stomach cancer.
Stomach cancer usually starts from a very common disease called chronic gastritis. This disease currently affects a lot of people, so many people are somewhat subjective. However, few people know that prolonging this condition for too long can lead to the risk of stomach cancer.
Besides, people infected with Helicobacter Pylori bacteria (H.Pylori bacteria) are also at risk of developing stomach cancer. H.Pylori bacteria live under the gastric mucosa and produce substances that damage the gastric mucosa, causing peptic ulcers; can cause many dangerous complications such as pyloric stenosis, ulcer perforation, gastric bleeding – can be fatal if not treated promptly. According to many studies around the world, the rate of chronic gastritis is very high, accounting for about 50% of the population, in which the cause is caused by H.Pylori bacteria accounting for about 95%.
In Vietnam, chronic gastritis is a fairly common disease, accounting for about 31-65% of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy cases, of which the rate of H.Pylori infection accounts for 63%-94.8%. The disease is common in both men and women, the age group with many diseases is from 40-49 years old; the rate of H.Pylori infection in chronic gastritis was 53.33%.
According to MSc-doctor Le Thi Tuyet Phuong, 115 People’s Hospital, one of the causes of stomach ulcers is drinking alcohol. And gastrointestinal bleeding is the most common complication of peptic ulcer. Currently, our country still focuses on and encourages the combination of Eastern and Western medicine.
Recent studies by gastroenterologists have demonstrated that successful eradication of H.Pylori will reduce the frequency of gastric ulcer recurrence and significantly reduce the risk of gastric cancer. With Western medicine to treat gastritis, Southern medicine such as licorice, passion fruit, honey, turmeric … has an important role in supporting treatment and prevention, said Dr. Phuong.
Talking about the use of Vietnamese medicine for the prevention and treatment of stomach ulcers, Prof. Nguyen Khanh Trach, Chairman of the Vietnam Internal Medicine Association said: In traditional medicine, turmeric is one of the few herbs that both detoxify the liver and help fight inflammation and heal stomach ulcers quickly. . The active ingredient that brings the effect of yellow turmeric is curcumin with many valuable biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, cancer prevention, liver protection, kidney protection, myocardial infarction prevention…
